Fast-forward through a world war, Spanish flu, the dawn of the Jazz Age, and several near-bankruptcies, and the world has changed far more than Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) may care to admit. Hemlines are shorter, footmen are a...

Maybe it’s the fact that some of the greatest rom-coms of all time are set during the months that end in “-ber.” In any case, the best fall movies and TV make us feel like anything is possible… falling in love, starting something new, winning the big game. And yet, we’re perfectly content to watch those possibilities unfold for someone else,...

The best true crime stories teach us about ourselves — about bravery, cowardice, greed, love and fear. True crime documentaries can be chilling to watch. They can also expose a deep vein of truth, revealing facets of society that would otherwise be hidden away. Nowhere is that quality more potently on display than in stories about cults.
Documentaries and docuseries about cults expose not only their warped power dynamics and chilling secrets, they also explore the voices and lives of those involved.
To paraphrase what the survivors of cults have said in a variety of different ways: Nobody willingly joins a cult. They join a movement, a group of friends, or even a religious organization. But what begins as a noble cause can take a terrible turn: the murder of a young woman covered up for decades, a utopian community’s descent into extortion and poison, a desire to manifest positivity...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Law & Order: Svu Season 25 Episode 11 “Prima Nocta.”] Heading into this season, Svu had a Rollins problem. And no, we’re not just talking about the fact that the show is not the same without her, and we want Kelli Giddish back on the cast full-time. It’s the simple matter of the show establishing that she’s bored teaching, would clearly much rather be back with the squad, and hasn’t really told her husband, Carisi (Peter Scanavino). This one episode addresses all of that. First of all, we have to acknowledge how adorable the family is at home together, with Rollins hiding a pancake in Carisi’s briefcase and the girls telling their father before the couple sees the kids off to school. Then, we find out that Rollins is unemployed! That’s right: She turned down tenure. “I was bored being a professor,” she says (which everyone already knew). With ...

Taylor Swift might sing on her new album Midnights that it “must be exhausting always rooting for the antihero” — but we all know watching them never, ever gets old.
The new song “Anti-Hero” (and its corresponding music video) conjures everything TV and movie lovers know about the antihero character: an outsider brimming with inner turmoil, staring directly at the sun but never in the mirror.
If the track has you itching to spend time with a few more antiheroes, look no further — we’ve rounded up seven shows and movies with those complicated characters you love to root for … even if you know you maybe shouldn’t. (You can also check out the Antiheroes and Outsiders category for even more.)...

Presenting the Oscar for best actress at the 94th Academy Awards earlier this year, Anthony Hopkins described the nominees as actors “who’ve built their careers on some of the most memorable and most unexpected performances in movie after movie after movie.” No surprise, then, that the winner turned out to be Jessica Chastain, who took home the gold for The Eyes of Tammy Faye.
With three Oscar nominations and seven Golden Globe nods (and one win for each), Chastain is a true Hollywood maverick. In her almost two decades on-screen, she’s played spies, troubled wives, real-life heroes (The Zookeeper’s Wife) and power-brokers. She’s gone to space, ruled over a haunted mansion (Crimson Peak) and fought a murderous clown (It: Chapter 2).

Whether you’ve been sucked into Yellowstone, stumbled upon the good ol’ days of Clint Eastwood’s résumé or simply long for the sweet, fresh air of the American West, the Western genre is having its moment in the sun. When you’re submerged in the world of tech and bustle, it’s easy to see why these stories are particularly alluring.
Maybe you’re a veteran of the genre looking for something new to enjoy or maybe you’re a newbie just getting started. Either way, there’s a Western waiting to draw you in. When you step into that world, expect conversations about justice, freedom and the human need to escape constraint. Don’t be surprised to see a bit of gunslinging. When everything feels overwhelming, sometimes you just need to focus on the good stuff. You want something that transports you to that warm and fuzzy place — that spot on the couch where the wine flows, the blanket hugs you and the only world that matters is the one on your screen. That’s where a good movie comes into play. You know the ones I’m talking about: the films where everyone is happy at the end. Or, well, most everyone.
These are stories that warm your heart and teach you a little something about life. They make you laugh, bring you to the verge of tears and, on occasion, make you reevaluate the stuff you’re taking for granted in your own life. So grab a cozy blanket and glass of wine (or a bowl of popcorn or whatever makes movie night extra special for...

In need of a motivational speech or two? Then we’ve got the coaches — and movies and shows — for you.
The role of a coach in a sports drama is catnip for movie stars. And while the world of athletics has long been a staple of the big screen, television has also seen plenty of playing time — with even sports agnostics finding themselves cheering on every throw or shot.
From a plethora of fictional and documentary sports content, we’ve coached up a hall-of-fame roster of shows and movies that feature a notable manager. By the end of some of these, you might be the one screaming, “Put me in, coach!”...

If you’ve ever found yourself questioning the nature of your reality, you’ve arrived at the right list. One of the reasons mind-benders are perennially popular is their versatility. Some incorporate elements of science fiction and horror, while others are just about ordinary people getting into extraordinary situations. It’s a genre that’s open to interpretation; the only real requirement is that they make you think.
There are so many engrossing mind-benders that we couldn’t limit ourselves to only shows or just movies, which means you’re getting recommendations for both. Our picks include the groundbreaking anthology Black Mirror, time-loop series Russian Doll and the hallucinatory film Spiderhead, among others. There are plenty of options here to keep you busy — and keep you guessing — for a while.

When “Hacks” costume designer Kathleen Felix-Hager read the script for the Season 3 premiere, a pivotal costume was just described as “the ugly dress.” And Felix-Hager delivered.
The premise is simple: a top-of-her-game Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) needs a speccatular dress for an event. After she rejects everything the stylists suggest, she takes them on a field trip to her storage warehouse — which looks like a CostCo for couture from the last 50 years. There, she finds something exactly right. But in the world of “Hacks,” that required something totally wrong.
“It had to be something that was hideous,” Felix-Hager told IndieWire. “And it was believable that Deborah, at some point in her life, could have been convinced that it was a beautiful dress.”
And yes, Deborah spoke the truth when she proudly proclaimed it was a Bill Blass dress from the ’80s. And like every good designer shopper, Felix-Unger found it...

For Gilmore Girls fans, a fluency in popular culture isn’t just appreciated, it’s vital. Amy Sherman-Palladino’s classic, long-running series is packed with reference-filled dialogue, steeped in homage and indebted to so much television and film that came before.
Perhaps you’ve blazed through all 153 episodes (and four mini-movies!) and you’re considering another start-to-finish rewatch. Or maybe you’re looking for something else to stream next that still has that Stars Hollow spirit. If that’s the case, we’ve got you covered. Whether you’re looking for crackling romantic comedy, grounded high school drama or some popcorn flicks you could imagine Lorelai and Rory making a marathon night out of, here’s a few titles to fill that Gilmore-shaped hole in your heart.

If you’ve ever eaten your spaghetti drizzled in syrup and served with a side of mini marshmallows, then you know spreading Christmas cheer for everyone to hear is the most important thing to do this time of year. And there’s no better way than watching movies on Netflix with swirly twirly gumdrop energy that will fuel your holiday spirit and put some pep(permint) in your step.
There’s nothing like the unbridled optimism of believing in Santa, singing cheery Christmas carols and eating as many cookies as possible. This is the time of year to embrace your inner child (and your inner elf) by singing loudly for all to hear and believing in all of the magic that comes with Christmastime, even if some people are more reluctant to do this than you are. Whether you’re an actual elf looking for your long-lost father who has...

The holiday season is supposed to be the “hap, happiest season of all.” But it isn’t that way for everyone. In spite of the mountains of glitter, endless amounts of Christmas cookies and ample amounts of cheer to go around, there can still be some pouting throughout the holidays. But what’s this season about if not finding a change of heart? And there’s no better way to get into the spirit of the season than by watching these family-friendly movies on Netflix. They’ll make your heart grow three sizes.
If you’ve ever had to spend the holiday season with a Scrooge or Grinch, then you understand how hard it can be. They never want to sing Christmas carols, deck the halls or participate in any fun traditions. Sometimes, somehow, these people can change, whether it’s through the power of song or after meeting Santa Claus himself.

Need a bit more laughter in your life? That was a trick question — the answer is always a resounding yes. While we certainly support attending as much live comedy as you can to get your jollies, sometimes the move is to skip the two-drink club minimum and settle in for a long night of couch cackling. That’s where we come in: Netflix has 16 Grammy-nominated and Grammy-winning comedy specials to choose from, all of which you can enjoy from the comfort of home.
Not sure where to start? Begin your comedy journey by checking out the three specials that received 2023 Grammy nominations. This upcoming year, Jim Gaffigan, Dave Chappelle and Patton Oswalt are all nominated for Best Comedy Album for Comedy Monster, The Closer andWe All Scream, respectively. This...

Miss the days of picking up the hot new VHS tape or listening to music on the latest Walkman? Well, strap in, because we’re headed back to the ’90s.
The last decade of the 20th century gave us plenty of gifts — *Nsync and the Backstreet Boys among them — but what’s still bringing people joy are TV shows from that period. Kids nowadays would be shocked by how easily — and hard — we’d laugh over dependable gimmicks like a teenager chugging a liter of orange soda or even a tall, strange man sliding through his neighbor’s doorway.
With that era forever in style, we’ve put together this list of ’90s shows that you’ve been waiting on. Read on for a mix of shows that aired back then or are set in the decade — all here for your throwback enjoyment.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Ghosts Season 3 Finale, “Isaac’s Wedding.”] Ghosts held a very special wedding in its Season 3 finale episode, aptly titled “Isaac’s Wedding,” but fans were in for a big surprise when Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones) couldn’t go through with his nuptials to Nigel (John Hartman), and that wasn’t even the most shocking moment. While Isaac experiences a touch of cold feet due to the presence of living stripper and DJ Chris (Deniz Akdeniz), he seems to be swayed back to the idea of marriage until Pete (Richie Moriarty) returns from his St. Lucia getaway sharing his feelings of love for a ghost named Donna (Allegra Edwards) that he met while there. Realizing that he doesn’t feel this way about Nigel, Isaac decides to step back from the impending marriage, leaving Carol (Caroline Aaron) of all ghosts to pick up the leftovers and get married to a bayonetted red coat.

Whether it’s his odor or his sneezes, Ghosts’ Isaac Higgintoot is all about the nose. Brandon Scott Jones’ Revolutionary War ghost on the CBS comedy died of dysentery. The smell followed him into the afterlife and serves as the special “power” he can inflict upon others who dwell at the show’s central estate, Woodstone Manor. It’s one of many things Isaac’s love interest Nigel Chessum (John Hartman) was able to overlook about him.
Another is that Nigel is dead because Isaac accidentally shot the British soldier when he sneezed whilst holding a rifle. And then there’s Isaac’s most recent offense of leaving Nigel on their wedding day during the show’s third season finale, “Isaac’s Wedding.” But apparently the Brit was cool with this, even if he did call Isaac a “yankee” a lot. Or at least this is the story that Isaac told everyone,...
