Alma & Oskar (2022)
And the Oskar goes to ...
Or is it comes (to) .... no pun intended of course. The movie is based on real life people - I did not know them. Any of them, but you may be more knowledgeable than I was (am). You have a muse here - and you have quite a few ... let's call them encounters. Quite a bit of nudity occurs - and I only mention it, so you are aware of it. It is nothing that will entice you to watch the movie (there are other things that are far better for you, if you are looking for stuff like that), but it may sway some to not watch it.
That all said, the drama this unfolds is quite something to behold. Acting is top notch - if you like dramas and real life ... well you could do a lot worse. I might even look up the real people now that I know they existed ...
Mob Land (2023)
Assemble - if you can and care
No pun intended - we do have a really good cast line up here. Yes even the Dillon bro (is that a pun? You decide) - but that also does water down a bit of the movie or rather the characters themselves. You kind of have too many people to follow and you may lose track of some of them.
Well the movie also does not have too much time to really dive into their characters either. I don't think anyone would want to live in Mob Land - even criminals would like to have a place to go back to, where they can have a bit of peace ... something you can not find here. And with an ending that is quite ... I don't know how much you will care ... but it is quite out there. Let's not aim too high (something the movie might have done, you be the judge) ... decent for sure ... but could have been better too ... with a bit more focus ...
Schokolade für den Chef (2008)
Driving Mr. Schmitt
He's no daisy - is that an additional pun? Whatever the case no pun(s) intended, this German comedy knows what it wants to be and what story it wants to tell. Quite the predictable one to say the least. Götz George is one of the best known actors Germany produced ... it is almost super funny that he would play someone who is avoiding the spot light.
But of course very important for the story and his ... well side kick ("chef"). Situational comedy works most of the time, there are certain things that do not work at all - and you have to suspend your disbelief for sure. Watch this (tv) movie and just have fun with it if you can ... not really high quality but good for what it is.
Manodrome (2023)
Filling the hole
Actually it should be void instead of hole, but I could not get away with "no pun intended" with the one I did not use. And talking of something not used ... in this case it is more a case of recognized. This may be a slow burner, but the movie is really hitting its marks.
This is about toxic masculinity, as much as it is about quite a few people not feeling seen. If you are overlooked, if you unhappy ... if something is missing ... to make you whole (not hole) .... you may find yourself in a group of people with like minded people.
And the movie describes the descent into the whole madness really well. Jesse Eisenberg really dives into the role - you can feel every part of his (trained) body ... being and having major issues. His girlfriend has quite the unthankful role ... and yet even she shines with the little time she is given. You also have A. Brody ... who is amazing as always ... so charismatic ... he knows what to say and how to say it. I would get into his group ... he makes you feel better ... but is is sustainable? Exactly ...
Apocalypse Clown (2023)
The clown is dead - long live the clown
No pun intended - and somewhat aimed at Ivan Kaye - once King in the show Vikings. So no connection between those two pieces of arts - apart from the same actor, but in very different roles. A great actor and he has quite a few good people (well not "good" in that sense) surrounding him.
A violent movie that has some jokes - but even they are mostly violent/brutal. So yes clowns are not (meant to be) fun ... that should be seen as a given, if you watch a horror movie including clowns. The story is quite simple, as are the characters. But apart from some criticism, it will not really surprise you or anything. Just go with the flow and enjoy it for what it is ... it is quite decent ... which cannot be said about the characters ...
Problemista (2023)
You are worth it
Problem solver - well sort of and sort of not. So no pun intended - I got lucky catching this at a sneak preview in cinemas. A movie that is quite ... well inspirational and really feeds into your brain and your fantasy. It also is giving you social commentary and might be able to push you - because you may not think of feel it, but you too can be and become what you want to.
You just have to change your behavior and demeanor ... I am obviously kind of kidding, but there still is some truth to this. The acting is superb - the script is just amazing! The ideas super funny. I am not sure what inspiration the actor had for his main character walk, but you won't forget it.
Hitting your over the egg with it ... I mean head. But you catch my drift. Humor is weird and strange in the best way possible. Watch it if you can - let your imagination run wild.
Noc w przedszkolu (2022)
Teach me
I know it's Kindergarten, so no pun intended is more than apt in this case. It works always, but more so here. Talking of working: our adults here do not seem to do the best job. Well unless you count their contribution to the comedy and the movie itself of course.
That all said, the movie and the performances are quite decent. They all lead to a sort of climax - a standoff too. Overall I reckon it is predictable - I also believe that there are nuances here (story and character wise), that are especially clear to polish audiences ... a connection others may not have I'd say. And that is ok - still the movie can be fun, if you let it guide you ... now you get a treat from one of the adults too (who behave like children a lot of the time too of course)
Dear David (2023)
Counting issues
No pun intended - it may also be more of a listening or "obeying" problem. Also a bully issue ... some people like to do stuff and insult others over the internet. What you may feel is a bit of "fun", is anything but. In this case it also seems to have consequences ... for the bully.
That said, the movie is quite predictable and I understand if some had issues with the movie itself. It is not as engaging as it could be. Justin Long is more a side character (still like him) - but if you feel this is the worst movie of the year, I kind of envy you. In the sense that it means you have not watched a lot of movies and therefor missed way worse movies.
Also good on and for you ... everyone else if you have a free minute for a low budget horror movie.
The Creeping (2022)
Ghosting
No pun intended - also not what you may think it is ... well unless you think it is exactly what it is ... this being a horror movie, you may guess right I reckon. That aside, the question is: how much of a horror movie fan you are? Because that will determine how much fun you'll have, how much slack you will cut and how far your suspension of disbelief goes.
The acting is ok I guess, but nothing that will make you too excited either. The story or rather the scares are quite predictable. Nothing major ... breaks through here - well apart from that one thing ... well even that does not entirely - but that is a different story and another pun added.
Christmas in the Wild (2019)
(Animal) friendly
Or Sex in not the City (?) - enough of that though and no pun(s) intended. The movie is quite predictable - I don't think anyone watching this will have problems knowing where this ultimately will lead them too. Holidays or Christmas - this may be the strongest issue one may have ... Christmas is a holiday season.
Don't get hung up on a word - especially not with a movie like that. It's supposed to be light and romantic - and open for everyone! With a message that is animal centered too. So all the best things - I may be a bit too nice to it (rating wise), but that is just how I roll! No matter if I am on vacation or not ... sorry for another pun.
Hand (2022)
Use your hand(s)
And not just those - no pun intended. If you like erotic dramas - well I reckon I do not have to tell you that this movie is one you could and probably should watch. There is obviously nudity in this, so you should not have problems with that. The movie is more about the relationships though - so not trying to titilate the viewer - at least not too much! It does focus on the drama - what do the characters think and why do they ... do it (with each other)? At least some of the questions will be answered.
The acting is good and I was able to stream this online. I would say that most of the story is predictable (character fate), but it still is gripping and suspenseful ... again no pun intended - drama baby (another pun?). Hand(s) off.
Escape the Field (2022)
In and out
Well if it were that easy, right? So no pun intended - another movie with a "waking up with strangers, not knowing how we got here - or how to get out" - although I reckon it does feel that they are "out" ... what with this being a field and all that.
I thought the story was quite tight and it is well told. Add to that a stellar cast, a friend of mine particularly happy with Theo Rossi being in this. I like the Dude too - got to know him from Sons (of Anarchy) and then other movies. The suspense is kept high from the start - the viewer not sure who is who ... and what their agenda is ... plus the threat that can be felt (and heard) throughout ... there also is a bit of blood (violence for you - well the characters) ... can you dig it? Not the field that is.
Cocaine Shark (2023)
Not high enough
No pun intended - I really try to avoid giving 1 out of 10 if possible. I am accused of being too nice when it comes to rating movies. I just couldn't ... well this really fails on many if not all respects when it comes to movies ... or what a movie should be and how they are made and should look like.
Editing, "acting" and the story (that I reckon is non existent) ... add to that Windows Screensaver effects ... and you have a "winner" - I am being sarcastic ... and I reckon that is a better joke than anything you will find here. All that said, I do understand if some people do like the low budget feel of this ... tough to watch to say the least ... Cocaine Bear becoming Citizen Kane in contrast ...
Sophia, der Tod und ich (2023)
Hello from the other side
Actually more like goodbye ... so no pun intended then. An interesting idea for sure - how would it be, if Death came for you and talked to you before he took you with him? Of course there are a lot of questions (yes there is not just one - all employed as you can imagine) .. and some are even answered ... which is quite something.
A lot of funny ideas and quite the story this tells. Going on a journey that goes quite different from what death thought it would be ... and which make it quite refreshing for the viewer. The humor has to be loved - and it is quite dark and strange! I thought it was quite fitting ... and the movie stayed true to it throughout ... so Kudos for that .. if you like low budget weird movies ... this could be for you! Really good acting too (tight script)
Us or Them (2023)
With friends like these ...
Well you know how the saying goes - so no pun intended. The movie starts with a different pair for us ... and quite the visuals! If you have issues with blood and violence - seeing it on screen ... well this movie probably is not for you. The beginning lets us know what is going on - what will happen with our main characters later on.
So we do know what is happening. The two main characters seem a bit reluctant (well one more than the other) to play ... well the game, but in the end, we know they will take part in it. What would you do? And who can you trust? How realistic is it then? Well ... I will leave that up to you ... it is quite suspenseful and if you dig it, you'll have a "grand time"
Karusell (2023)
What goes around ... comes around and around it goes
No pun intended - it's Halloween season! Well if you believe the international title - which is true of course, when it comes to the time this plays. But it is just the setting - it could have been easter too. Of course it is a lot "funnier" to have a revenge movie play out in the scary season.
The past is coming to the present to haunt ... well not us, but the people who did something wrong. That is more than fair to say. We can try to guess who the bad ... person(s) is(are) here - and by bad I mean the killer(s), not the morally questionable "victims" ... again I am trying to say or rather write as little as possible ... though I do think you will be able to figure it out yourself ... decent slasher ... weird ending if you can call it that.
21 Paraíso (2022)
Only scenes
Or only positions if you want to use the (international) title of the movie. So no pun intended - Onlyfans: I don't know what the original idea was behind it. I know they tried to root out most of the adult stuff that is going on ... on their website. But they were not able to - the content creators revolted ... and won.
I think there should be a documentary about that - or the site overall. The movie is about a man and a woman and their pursuit ... of happiness but even more so: money! The movie does start with them ... getting it on! For their fans! You got to create content ... to keep people interested.
There are a lot of things that we get to see behind the scenes - and we are there to witness stuff happening. Which means you can not be too sensitive ... and be offended by nudity - there is even a quite graphic scene (oral pleasure is being given) on a computer. Mostly you won't see anything graphic apart from nudity ... if you want that stuff ... well there is a lot of that on the internet ... still the movie could have had a bit more substance ... a bit more conflict ... a bit more other things too. Not a bad movie ... I reckon I was just hoping this had more to offer (no pun intended)
Love at First Like (2023)
Love is in the ... cloud/air
No pun intended - and it is online, not really stored on a cloud (or is it in a cloud? I actually have no idea to be honest). This is quite predictable - but the actors make it worthwhile, at least that is how I felt. You know from the first moment where this will end up or where it is going.
The first interaction of the two leads could not have been worse - well definitely not romantic at all. But that is how the best relationships start out, right? You may feel that one of the two is a bit annoying (or both), depending on where you come from. Still I think both will win you over - we as humans are more complex in the end ... so there goes the neighborhood ... a bit over the top at times, still quite sweet ... if you are into that sort of stuff of course.
Three Amigos! (1986)
Un dos tres ...
No Maria here - also not the song I may or may not be referencing either - so no pun intended. I reckon there is not much of a song that stuck with me. Not because the movie did not try to be as nice and close to Western movies of the past ... it does use quite a few of the cliches - image and sound wise that is.
The best part of this are the three Amigos - Steve Martin and Martin Short are just a power couple ... add Chase to them and it works like a charm. Chase may have lost a bit of his touch over the years (see Community and the comments the other cast members had in store for him and his performance), but he still got it here.
Which is true for our paper heroes here ... who could be the three stooges ... I reckon there was a bit of thinking behind it too. There are a lot of nods and callbacks - you do not have to know and see them all. You can still have fun with this. It never reaches heights that were set by Mel Brooks for example, but it still is decent to say the least. The dance they have is just awesome ... well the 3 amigos dance ... they also have other dances, that may not be ... well hopefully you are not too sensitive or offended by their hip movements (cliches) ... yes this takes its notes from the Western movies that strangers come to help poor (Mexican) villagers! Suspend your disbelief and go with the flow .. the movie is fun like that.
Tarot (2024)
Horror Scope
No pun intended - Tarot reading ... you do not have to believe in that stuff. You also may be able to suspend your disbelief enough to not be too angry at the characters here for doing not just dangerous things (in hindsight - it's not like everyone believes in the occult or anything of that sort) ... but also criminal ones ... as in breaking and entering ... well kind of.
But let's backtrack - the movie starts off interesting but slow ... but also packed! I challenge anyone to remember the readings ... all of them, that take place ... before we get the title ... quite the long prologue if you ask me. Still it sort of works - if you tune into the vibe of the movie.
You will not get too many likeable characters ... well not that they are despicable .. but there is not much that makes them endearing ... that you will remember ... yes one of them had a birthday. Also the Dude/best friend from the Spiderman movies (and yes I liked the little nod with him saying that there certainly are spiders there - it's the little things we can cherish) ... the special effects are quite good. Though you have to like the fact that the movie is showing ... a lot! There may be an uncut version coming out (watched it in cinemas), but this still shows violence and ... well scary images I think is the correct term.
So not much left to your fantasy ... but it could be a lot bloodier ... just saying. Decent I reckon overall especially if you are into horror movies ...
Monpti (1957)
City of love and ...
Well Paris especially is known for being the city of love .. and I reckon in this case also the city of young beautiful people trying to impress each other - not always with the truth mind you. Romy Schneider is best known for her role as Sissi - obviously she has done way more movies, this being another one. She was quite beautiful - and her partner (in lying?) crime is Horst Buchholz, whom I know from the Magnificent Seven movie.
Now I don't think this little movie that could will be seen by many people and maybe it will play more of fans of one or both of those actors. But it is nicely told and the story does make sense overall. Hurdles sometimes are a bit .. well self inflicted, but the chemistry of both leads is there and can be felt. This may or may not be your cup of tea - it is a decent movie/drama/love story for sure.
Gwimul (2021)
Trying to find it
The good or the evil? Or is it maybe both? In any case it is no pun intended as always. The show is a bit long, but with all the twists and turns, it does need the time to unfold. So you may need a bit of patience (and suspension of disbelief, but that is a given of sorts) to go through it, but you will be rewarded with a really good tv show for it.
That all said, the acting is top notch, the story is sometimes a bit hard to follow, but you will never lose interest or the plot - characters seem to change their behavior or rather their mood/actions, but this is only perception. The relationships uncovered, the secrets buried (literally and otherwise) are quite something to behold. The score (sound) is also very well, not just for show, but generally speaking.
Yes it goes to crazy town at times - but it never leaves this planet - if that makes sense(?) ... maybe just in my head, but I think you got what I am trying to say.
Silverton Siege (2022)
You gotta fight ... for your right .... to ...
Freedom? I reckon no pun intended - definitely not party! Not in this case - what I did not know: this is based on actual events! A Dog Day Afternoon kind of thing then - not Attica though, in case you were wondering - but Mandela is more than a good substitute to "fight for".
But does a good cause excuse wrongdoings? Sometimes it seems you have to do something that can be considered illegal ... morally things may not be always clear, but that will be up to you to decide how you feel about it and our main characters. I think most will have some sympathy for them ... that said, it is not just clear cut. We do have some twists - and they did surprise me, well some of them did.
A good movie overall about a story that should be more widely known ... or maybe it is and I am in the minority. Whatever the case, decent movie for sure.
Yentl (1983)
Gentle?
No pun intended - my Yiddish is not the best as you can tell - well actually that may not be entirely true. While I am not able to decipher that language I think it is easy to tell that Barbara or her character is female. Especially considering the times this was made - I mean I reckon nowadays one could go with the "identifies as". And I don't mean that disparaging or anything like that. Letting people express themselves is always a good thing - you don't always have to understand it.
It does get a bit complicated, especially considering all the relationships - quite close ones. People wanting to get intimate, not knowing who (s)he really is. The movie may be a bit too long, but the really good acting and the engaging story do help getting you along (for the ride) ...
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
King is dead - long live the King
No pun intended - we are talking Ceasar here! And I really need to re-watch the original movies again. But the new movie series that may or may not end with this one, is really well told and done. Especially the visual and sound effects are just amazing to say the least. I did watch it in Atmos, so maybe there was a bit more "oomph" than normally ... but yes they really use a wide range - and you can hear it (no pun intended).
We get thrown into a new world - a world where it seems that (wo)man has lost ... entirely. But you can't make a movie like this without having a homo sapiens! She is even on the poster - and you do not have to have eagle eyes (or claws for that matter) to realize that she is different than the humans (echoes) that are described in the movie.
There may be not too much story in this, but the social implications, the moral complexity this shows ... it is incredible actually. It really goes places and it does not give easy answers! You want to root for someone - and our main character/ape is the one to go obviously ... but is he too soft, too gullible? There are quite a few things that go back to the survival game ... as if there couldn't be a live together ... the movie is showing us quite the horrors ... things we have done ... things we continue to do I reckon ... so there is more to this than the surface is showing ... very well made (in many respects)
