Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
The Boys in the Boat (George Clooney)
This is, from start to finish, an underdog sports picture. Edgerton puts a welcome spin on the gruff-but-caring coach archetype, and Turner does the same with his lead character. Soft-spoken, stern, and handsome, this is a role someone like Ronald Reagan would have excelled at bringing to the screen some 80 years ago; Turner, luckily, is more interesting to look at and a better actor. Alexandre Desplat’s score is maybe the most playful thing about this film, and it works when it needs to. The race sequences are unquestionably Boys‘ highlight, Clooney making use of zoom lenses and well-placed cameras to capture the speed and fluidity of each competition. There is a real tension mined in these scenes,...

Demi Moore almost walked away from acting before making her Cannes debut in “The Substance.”
The iconic actress who has graced the screen since the 1980s told Entertainment Weekly that she was “questioning [her] own ability” in Hollywood for the last four years.
“It’s not like I ever officially ‘left,’ but I understand the sentiment and appreciate it because there hasn’t been a project or a role that has come along that has been this dynamic for me to really dive into and sink my teeth into,” Moore said. “I went through a period of even questioning whether this is what I should still be doing. In the last four years or so, I felt that it was a personal question that I wanted to explore and see: ‘Was this where I should be putting my energy?’ When you plant seeds, you wait to see what grows.”

Demi Moore Reveals She Almost Quit Hollywood. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Demi Moore, who is basking in the success of her comeback movie The Substance, revealed she often struggled to find her place in the industry, which almost made her consider quitting acting. The 61-year-old actress, arguably one of Hollywood’s most recognisable faces, took a long sabbatical after starring in the 2011 thriller Margin Call.
Over a decade after disappearing from the spotlight, Demi Moore made a triumphant return with the Horror flick “The Substance” and her supporting turn in the FX limited series” Feud: Capote vs. the Swans,” which has received rave reviews from critics. Her movie, “The Substance,” about an ageing actress who resorts to a black-market drug to create a younger version herself, premiered at the Cannes 2024 film festival and received an 11-minute standing ovation.

We know the drill: When Hollywood actresses hit a certain age, they’re pushed off the industry conveyor belt. Some find a few roles, or perhaps a gig as a brand ambassador, spokesperson, or fitness guru. That’s the world of Elisabeth Sparkle, as played by Demi Moore, in Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror industry satire “The Substance.” However, this film represents the best role in the 61-year-old Moore’s career.
In the mid-1990s, Moore was a star after “St. Elmo’s Fire,” “Ghost,” “A Few Good Men,” “Indecent Proposal,” “Disclosure.” She hit her financial peak with the 1996 “Striptease” — $12 million, which inspired snarky asides of “Gimme Moore” — but the reviews were bad and the box office not much better. Her career shifted into smaller movies and smaller roles (including a standout turn in 2011’s “Margin Call”), many of which didn’t deserve her presence and, well, sparkle.

Sony’s Kraven the Hunter was supposed to be 2024’s second Spider-Man-adjacent film. However, the studio is trying to put as much space between it and Madam Web as possible. Kraven is just barely staying in the calendar year.
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the live-action adaptation of the comic book villain, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, has been moved from August 30 to December 13. The Karate Kid previously held this date. Sony has since moved that reboot to May 30, 2025.
Karven the Hunter isn’t being moved due to production delays; it has been ready to go for a while. The latest Spidey adversary flick was initially slated to debut last October. Sony decided against this since the actor’s strike would have left the movie without a cast to talk it up in the press.

It is possible that one day an excellent narrative feature in the vein of The Big Short, BlackBerry, Dumb Money or Margin Call will be made about MoviePass, a company built––and destroyed––by several larger-than-life figures. For now, we have Muta’Ali’s documentary MoviePass, MovieCrash, which provides a broad overview of the deal everyone knew was too good to be true: a company that, for about a year, was so obsessed with subscriber growth that they offered customers the chance to see one movie per day for only $9.95 month.
Inspired by a series of Business Insider articles, MoviePass, MovieCrash features interviews with the company’s founders Stacy Spikes and Hamet Watt along with other company––insiders including Mitch Lowe, the man who would ultimately take Spikes’ position. In a bit of good luck, Muta’Ali gets the interview with Lowe just weeks before he’s indicted on securities fraud alongside Ted Farnsworth,...

Francis Ford Coppola‘s 1974 masterpiece “The Conversation” will be remade as a TV series, with “Margin Call” and “All Is Lost” filmmaker J.C. Chandor attached to both write and direct the series, IndieWire has confirmed.
Chandor will direct via his CounterNarrative Films banner alongside Temple Hill, producer Adam Fishbach, and executive produced by Coppola’s American Zoetrope. Erin Levy, known for her work on “Mad Men” and “Mindhunter,” will be the showrunner on “The Conversation” remake.
MRC is the studio behind the series, and the company optioned the TV remake rights directly from the Coppola estate.
Despite a rumor that Aubrey Plaza was attached to star, no cast is involved at this stage, as a source close to the project tells IndieWire. Other media reports suggested it would be a limited series and that it was set up at a network, but it is being envisioned as an ongoing series,...

In a year of reduced Marvel output, there are still a lot of interesting comic book adaptations emerging in 2024 from both Sony and Marvel Studios. As it stands, Deadpool 3 is the only MCU film releasing in theaters this year, but the Sony side of Marvel has three movies heading to multiplexes, including Kraven the Hunter, which was previously set to make its debut in 2023.
MCU series Echo has already hit Disney+ in January, but here’s what you can expect to arrive in the rest of 2024.
Madame Web – February 14
The webs will be madaming extremely hard in 2024 as Sony returns to the Spider-Man-adjacent well to pluck out the first of two new gems. Will they be sparkly, box office-friendly Venom diamonds? Or will they be cubic zirconia Morbiuses? Only time will tell, but the first trailer for February’s Madame Web was leaning heavily towards Morbius, inspiring reams of...

Back in the soap opera glory days of the 1980s, I remember well Demi Moore‘s short stint on the popular “General Hospital.” With her distinctive gravelly voice, movie star beauty and strong personality, it was obvious that the small screen couldn’t contain her, and that she would go on to bigger things.
Demi Gene Guynes was born on November 11 in 1962 in Roswell, New Mexico. Following a difficult childhood, she left school her junior year and did some modeling before meeting and marrying musician Freddy Moore, with whom she co-wrote three songs. She had a couple of small film roles before landing the “General Hospital” gig in 1983. Then a series of popular films beginning with “Blame It On Rio” in 1984 led to an impressive string of blockbuster films throughout the 1980s and 1990s, making her one of the biggest stars of the era.

Negotiations on a new SAG-AFTRA contract are set to continue on Wednesday, as the studios aim to salvage the 2024 summer box office.
The union resumed bargaining on Tuesday for the first time in almost two weeks. The studios delivered a new offer on the most contentious issue — streaming residuals — that they hoped would break the deadlock that has led to a 103-day strike.
In a memo to members on Tuesday evening, SAG-AFTRA offered a brief update on the talks.
“Today, the CEOs came back to the table. We are scheduled to continue talks with them tomorrow,” the union stated. “We will continue to provide updates with you directly. Remember – don’t believe anything you read in the press unless it comes directly from us. Keep showing up on the picket lines and make your voices heard around the country.”

The list of directors who put their trust in Robby Müller could constitute a nice history of post-war cinema. Sony Pictures’ “Dumb Money” could be the most frightening horror movie this year, and the Oscars would be smart to embrace it. That’s not how real women look!
When it comes to depictions of women’s bodies, Hollywood and the fashion industry have long faced criticism for missing the mark. That’s why the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media is teaming up with production companies Rose Pictures and Besties Make Movies on the documentary “Nothing Fits.”
Jennifer Holness, an alum of Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival, is attached to direct the feature film, which will examine the impact Hollywood and fashion have had on how multiple generations of women feel about their bodies and the struggles faced by those who do not fit the industries’ standard beauty norms.
“Nothing Fits” will take a deep dive into more than a century of fashion and deconstruct how it has elevated certain female body types while leaving others behind. The documentary aims to capture the experiential connection that women feel with fashion, while...

Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular character in the R-rated film. Directed by J.C. Chandor, best known for writing and directing the films Margin Call, All Is Lost, A Most Violent Year, Triple Frontier, here’s a first look at the brand new trailer starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, Christopher Abbott and Russell Crowe.

Filmmaker J.C. Chandor – an Oscar nominee for writing “Margin Call,” the man who directed one of Robert Redford’s final lead performances in “All Is Lost,” and a New York Mets fan – is back with his first studio blockbuster: “Kraven the Hunter,” the latest entry in Sony’s expanded Spider-Man universe.
The studio has had some success with its Spider-Man adjacent films, turning “Venom” into a blockbuster franchise with Tom Hardy and even scoring modest ticket sales with “Morbius” with Jared Leto despite toxic reviews. “Kraven the Hunter” seems to follow the template, turning a classic Spider-Man villain into an anti-hero, of sorts, who isn’t necessarily all-bad. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the title character, a violent killer whose DNA was altered after being attacked by a lion (sure). A shirtless Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Russell Crowe doing a questionable Russian accent. And a CGI lion attack that seems to result in superpowers. Judging by the official red band trailer for Kraven the Hunter, this could be a standalone Spider-Man villain origin story that brings home the bounty for Sony Pictures after the memeable mess that was last year’s Morbius.
Just think twice about taking the kids to this one: it looks like the studio got their money’s worth for Kraven‘s R rating, with easily a dozen henchmen...

Aaron Taylor-Johnson beamed in to Las Vegas’ CinemaCon on Monday to show the first footage from his anticipated Marvel film “Kraven the Hunter” — an ultraviolent spree of blood and throbbing biceps that pleased the annual convention of theater owners.
Taylor-Johnson called the J.C. Chandor-directed project “a Marvel movie grounded heavily in the real world. We know he is a fierce hunter, a highly trained killer.” He then gave an answer to what he deemed “the internet’s biggest question” — whether the film would receive an R-rating.
“Fuck yeah, it will be rated R,” the star said to huge applause from the Colosseum Theater at Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino.
In the world premiere footage, Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven is a tactical stalker with a penchant for cropped leather vests and five-star hair. He shreds his victims viscerally, often with primitive claw-shaped weapons. Blood pours freely over the screen and, at one intense moment,...

Amazon Prime Video has popped off with plenty of new content for March 2023 with original shows and some great catches for films to stream. “Top Gun: Maverick” will arrive March 24, and Jordan Peele’s “Nope” before that on March 21. Jordan will become available at the beginning of March along with all of the “Rocky” films as well as “Cinderella Man” for the broader boxing buff community. A theatrical release from 2022, “The Silent Twins,” starring Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrence arrives March 7.
Friday March 3 will see “Daisy Jones & The Six” rock the world when the band’s epic limited series comes out. Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, Suki Waterhouse, and more will bring Taylor Jenkins Reid’s best-selling novel to life. Other shows to look forward to on the streamer are Donald Glover’s horror series...

With its list of new releases for March 2023, Amazon Prime Video might be rolling out its most impressive monthly lineup yet.
We know that sounds like something straight out of a press release but in this case, it’s actually true! Prime Video, bless it, has some excellent original titles like The Boys and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but its monthly release updates have often been less inspiring than its TV peers. That’s certainly not the case with March 2023 though.
Prime Video gets its streaming party started early by premiering the first three episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six on March 3. This series, based on a book of the same name, tells the fictional Behind the Music-esque story of an equally fictional band. Then, on March 17, Amazon’s partnership with Donald Glover bears its first fruit with the series about obsessive fandom called Swarm. Reggie Jackson documentary Reggie premieres...

Heroes star Zachary Quinto is returning to NBC as the titular character in Wolf, a one-hour medical drama pilot from writer-producer Michael Grassi, producer-director Lee Toland Krieger and executive producer Greg Berlanti. The project comes from Warner Bros Television, where all three are under overall deals.

Wolf is inspired by the books The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and An Anthropologist on Mars by Oliver Sacks. It follows a revolutionary, larger-than-life neurologist, Dr. Oliver Wolf (Quinto), and his team of interns as they explore the last great frontier, the human mind, while also grappling with their own relationships and mental health.
Dr. Wolf, head of neurology at Bronx General, is an obsessive genius. He’s drawn to people society has deemed as “other” and helps them find hope and purpose. He embraces differences rather than suppressing them.

March is still winter, no matter which animal you ask, which means it’s still completely acceptable to cancel all plans and curl up under a blanket in front of the TV. Prime Video’s movie library updates throughout the month, with most of its new additions on March 1 — including the “Rocky” saga, multiple “Carrie” adaptations, “12 Angry Men,” and more.
For Prime users who love books and TV, March means the highly-anticipated premiere of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The eponymous Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne’s band (Sam Claflin) make a mean match, starting with a hit single and leading to what seems like endless fame and glory. But where there is success there is peril, and both the band’s rise and an electric connection with Daisy threaten Billy’s marriage and everyone’s personal lives. James Ponsoldt,...

Working in the Motion Picture Literary department, the respected Australian native has built a strong internationally-oriented client list (some of whom she has worked with since their first short films) including Garth Davis, Maria Schrader, Goran Stolevski, Oliver Hermanus, Joshua Oppenheimer, Warwick Thornton, Na Hong-Jin, Eva Husson, Emily Atef, Agnieszka Holland, Phillip Noyce, Ellen Kuras, Benedict Andrews, James Ponsoldt, Anthony Chen, Levan Akin, Katrin Gebbe and Andor director Ariel Kleiman.
We hear Smith is likely to segue to management — there has been interest from multiple companies over the years — where she will be able to flex her producorial instincts. Most of her clients are expected to follow.
The timeline for her departure from UTA is understood to be in the 4-6 week range.
Smith’s exit from UTA coincides with a layer of layoffs at the agency.

Also leaving on Feb. 28, is Scream 4, less than two weeks before Hayden Panettiere’s Kirby Reed returns to the horror franchise in Scream 6.

Earlier this month, Netflix will drop the 2015 action rom-com Mr. Right, starring Sam Rockwell as an assassin and Anna Kendrick as the woman who falls for him.

In February 2023, Netflix will remove a bunch of movie and TV series from its library,
Netflix UK and Netflix US takes down numerous titles each month without fanfare, meaning that many things on your watchlist could suddenly disappear.
These removals are due to licencing deals coming to an end. Often, the titles make their way back to Netflix in the following year, but sometimes they leave to go to other platforms.
This month sees a selection of Netflix Originals being taken down, also.
To minimise surprise, we have put together a comprehensive list of everything being removed in both Netflix UK and US.

There’s a moment in writer-director Chloe Domont’s impressively realized feature-length debut, Fair Play, when a collection of finance-bros, employees of the fictional One Crest Capital, a Manhattan-based hedge fund, half-watch a corporate-sponsored, obligatory, diversity and inclusion presentation while a newly fired Pm (portfolio manager) takes out his rage at his summary dismissal on the computer equipment in his soon-to-be-ex-office. Attention momentarily shifts to the Pm before shifting back to the presentation, a sign or signal that the ex-pm’s tantrum isn’t new or novel; it’s close to routine for the familiarly ruthless, cutthroat world of high finance and low ethics. Domont’s film, however, however, doesn’t center on the finance bros specifically like its predecessors, but on a twenty-something couple,...

No matter how many “good little movies” play at Sundance, this festival simply can’t continue to be what it has been unless it features movies that can break out of the independent-film-world bubble. I’m talking about movies like “Fair Play.” It’s a finance drama, set inside a cutthroat New York hedge fund, and it’s also a romantic thriller that probes the theme of sexual passion (and sexual politics) in the post-#MeToo age. It’s one of the rare Sundance films that could break through in the real world; at a time when movies like “Tár” and “The Fabelmans” have struggled, that makes it a rare commodity. Yet the key to the film’s potential success isn’t just that it’s made in a commercial genre. It’s that “Fair Play,” while full of sex, money, corporate backstabbing, and a lot of other things that are fun to watch,...

Kevin Spacey has booked his latest film project just weeks after winning a sexual battery lawsuit in the U.S., an individual with knowledge of the casting told TheWrap on Monday.
The two-time Oscar winner will voice a mysterious and murderous antagonist who takes control of a self-driving car, akin to Kiefer Sutherland’s vocal performance in Joel Schumacher’s “Phone Booth.”
The film, entitled “Control” and written and directed by Gene Falliaze, is about a British government minister, Stella Simmons (Lauren Metcalf), who has an affair with the Prime Minister (Mark Hampton). One night, Simmons heads home in her self-driving car to find the vehicle remotely hijacked by someone who knows her secret and wants to punish her.
Shooting will take place early next year at Camberwell Studios and on location in London, while Spacey will wrap his purely voice-over role this week. The actor recently won a 40 million...

March 2022 is a great month for blonde women with cold, dead stares on Hulu.
With its list of new releases for March 2022, Hulu is highlighting two major original series ripped straight from the headlines. The first is The Dropout, which premieres on March 3. Roadside Attractions has acquired U.S. distribution rights to “Call Jane,” a historical drama about a group of women working to provide access to safe abortions.
The film debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, premiering at a time when the Supreme Court is debating Roe v. Wade and with it the future of reproductive rights. Roadside plans a Fall 2022 theatrical release for the film, which means it could hit cinemas after Roe has been overturned and several states have moved to make abortion illegal. “Call Jane” is the feature directorial debut of Phyllis Nagy, who was nominated for an Oscar for her script for “Carol.”
Set in 1968, the film follows a suburban housewife Joy (Elizabeth Banks). When her pregnancy leads to a life-threatening heart condition, Joy must navigate an all-male medical establishment unwilling to terminate her pregnancy in order to save her life. Her journey for a solution...

You may need a PhD in Ingmar Bergman to understand every nuance of French writer and director Mia Hansen-Løve’s “Bergman Island.” Still, the writer’s branch of the Academy may have enough of the qualifications to embrace its charming story. Even with delectable performances from its cast ensemble, most notably Mia Wasikowska in her finest acting effort yet, the small independent film will undoubtedly face significant challenges during awards season. Distributor IFC Films will have to be very specific with voting groups to entice members to give the film its fair shake. Will they be successful in that quest? That remains to be determined.
“Bergman Island” tells the story of Tony and Chris, who retreat to the island that inspired the legendary director and writer Ingmar Bergman. There, they write screenplays for their upcoming films, but reality and fiction begin to blur as the weekend continues.

The Robinhood effect has now extended to the movies. Days after the Reddit-led consumer buys of struggling GameStop, AMC Theaters, and other stocks, two of the most successful recent films about Wall Street manipulation are soaring high in home rentals.
Apple TV, usually the quickest to detect trends and spot immediate response, currently has Adam McKay’s 2015 “The Big Short” at #3 and Martin Scorsese’s 2013 “The Wolf of Wall Street” at #4. That places them ahead of all but two current releases (“Tenet” and “Greenland”) as the most-ordered titles.
This rapid response parallels what happened last February when Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 “Contagion” flew high with its story that paralleled the then-emergent Covid-19 pandemic.
“The Big Short” (based on Michael Lewis’ non-fiction account of Wall Street firms reaping profits from the 2008 financial collapset) and “Wolf of Wall Street” (based on the career of broker Jordan Belford) clicked with the public a...

The sad reality of watching someone you love disappear before your eyes is rarely captured with the restraint found in “Supernova,” . Closer in spirit to the literary “Away from Her” than the sentimental “Still Alice,” “Supernova” doesn’t center on the particulars of what dementia does to the mind and body, but instead maps out the painful road ahead as the pair find meaning in their remaining time together.
The film opens with a shot that shouldn’t be so radical, but is: Sam (Firth) and Tusker (Tucci) are asleep, and naked, spooning amid tangled bedsheets, and the way Sam hangs clings to his partner telegraphs a gulf ahead. It’s so tender a moment you almost don’t want the camera to flinch. Sam, we learn, is a decorated composer, and Tusker a celebrated novelist, and to mark 20 years of being together, they’re embarking on a road trip...
