The summer movie kickoff has been a little bumpy, but the staff at IMDb have their sights set on several highly anticipated movies and shows coming out in June.
See IMDb’s June Picks
If you need something light and fun for the weekend, check out Glen Powell and Adria Arjona in ‘Hit Man’ on Netflix. Based on the true story of part-time undercover investigator Gary Johnson, director Richard Linklater's crime comedy finds Powell moonlighting as a fake hit man who starts to fall for a woman who enlists his services.
Those looking for thrills and chills can head to the theater, where Will Smith and Martin Lawrence go undercover in ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die,’ and Dakota Fanning finds herself trapped with a bunch of strangers under spooky circumstances in the directorial debut of M. Night Shyamalan's daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan.
The rest of June will keep many fans busy with new episodes of three Emmy-winning series: Season 4 of “The Boys” (6/13) on Prime Video, Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” (6/16) on Max, and Season 3 of “The Bear” (6/27) on Hulu.
There’s not a ton on the menu for families, but ‘Inside Out 2’ is expected to be one of 2024’s box office bright spots. The Pixar sequel brings back Riley’s original emotions and adds Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) as Anxiety and Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear’) as Ennui.
Take a look at all the staff picks for the month in our guide, where you can watch trailers, read more about what’s coming, and add movies and shows to your Watchlist....

“The Acolyte,” Disney+’s newest Star Wars series, reached 4.8 million views in its first day of availability. This marks the streamer’s biggest series premiere of 2024, according to Disney.
An exact first-day viewership total isn’t available for “Ahsoka,” the most recent Star Wars series, though Disney did report that it took five days to reach 14 million views. That comes out to an average of 2.8 million viewers per day — 2 million below the launch of “The Acolyte.” (Note: a “view” is calculated by dividing the number of hours each title is watched by its runtime.)

It's already been over a year for since The Last of Us wrapped up its first season and, thanks to last year's Hollywood strikes, the series now won't return until 2025.
Today, it's been confirmed it will be back with fewer episodes than season 1. In an interview with Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), co-creators, executive producers, showrunners and directors Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann confirmed season 2 will consist of seven episodes. On the plus side, they'll boast longer runtimes.
The story, which adapts The Last of Us Part II video game, is also expected to continue into a third and possibly fourth season!
"The story material that we got from Part II of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons," Mazin tells the trade.

“Queer Planet” may seem like the kind of Pride Month programming that gets trotted out every June — “Oooh, look at the cute lil’ gay penguins!” — but this new 90-minute documentary has a lot more on its mind.
“[That] most forms of life do not reproduce strictly heterosexually like we do, is quite a staggering thing to realize,” “Queer Planet” producer and director Ed Watkins told Indiewire. Also staggering is how centuries of research into same-sex behavior in the animal kingdom was hidden or ignored. What “Queer Planet” celebrates should not be news to anyone. But the doc is something of a revelation.
Ably aided by narration from Andrew Rannells that marks this as a very gay time indeed, “Queer Planet” is as smart as it is silly and as important as it is celebratory. Now streaming on Peacock, IndieWire spoke to Watkins over email about the filmmaking process, why he’s tough on Charles Darwin,...

The Acolyte is off to a promising start on Disney+.
The new Star Wars series launched on June 4 with two episodes, generating 4.8M views in its first day on the streamer. That makes it the biggest series premiere on Disney+ this year.
Disney+ doesn’t generally release viewership data for series after just one day of streaming. In August, the streamer said that Ahsoka drew 14M views in its first 5 days. As of now, The Acolyte is on track to zoom right past that benchmark, but it’ll need to sustain similar viewership over the weekend in order to do so.
The streamer can be a bit inconsistent with its viewership data, generally. When Percy Jackson and the Olympians debuted in December, Disney+ announced that series’ six-day viewership tally. However, releasing the viewership for one single day of viewing does indicate that Disney+ feels quite confident in The Acolyte‘s ability to keep performing well.

Netflix has set a new date for its highly anticipated boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, which is being hailed by one promoter as “a showdown that will be talked about for generations to come.”

You’re watching your favorite show, and one of the main characters is in a jam.
He’s held captive by mercenaries and, for the past two episodes, has struggled to escape a labyrinthine prison. It’s unclear whether our hero will live or die, but the next episode opens with a warning: “The following contains a depiction of suicide. Viewer discretion is advised.” Welp, you think, I know how this story ends.
So what happens when trigger warnings need spoiler warnings? As content disclaimers trend in television, some viewers are taking issue when they give away crucial plot details or ruin surprises.

This whole month is dedicated to celebrating the LGBTQ+ community (and there’s really no reason not to do that the whole year through), as cities around the world are gearing up for their Pride festivities. This weekend includes events in Los Angeles and Washington, among others, so why not join in on the party?
June may revel in being out and proud, but you can honor the concept of being out without actually going out. Just stay right at home and catch a Pride Month–worthy stream. Call up a documentary about an inspiring trans athlete, a series with a huge cast of characters across a wide spectrum of sexuality, or a string of films about love. What’s not to love about that?
A romantic-noir-screwball-action comedy that will take you out. Richard Linklater’s Hit Man stars Glen Powell (who also co-wrote the script) as a professor with...

Warner Bros. Discovery’s bid to stay in the business of basketball is anything but a slam dunk.
The media company has signaled in recent days to the NBA that it would like to discuss the prospect of carving out a small package of game rights to go alongside those already negotiated with Disney, Amazon and NBCUniversal, according to people familiar with the talks. Current NBA media rights are owned by Disney and Warner, but the contract behind them lapses after the 2024-2025 season, and the league has been in discussions with media companies for weeks over new contracts.

John Schneider, who played Beauregard “Bo” Duke on The Dukes of Hazzard, has been opening up about finding love again just over a year after the tragic death of his wife, Alicia Allain. The actor appeared on the May 29 episode of the Grace Begins podcast, where he revealed he is in a new relationship, though he did not reveal the name of his new partner. However, he did note that she, too, lost a spouse, which is what bonded them. “The last year has been pretty wonderful. But the year before that was really rough,” Schneider said, per Fox News. “But God pays attention. God sent a widower to a widow and a widow to a widower who [gets] it, who understands.” “I tell you what, I was ready to give it up, all of it — everything. Then, just when I thought the very notion of dating or holding another hand was repulsive,...

Jimmy Kimmel paid tribute to the Allied forces who stormed the beaches of Normandy 80 years ago before taking a shot at Donald Trump, who he referred to as “Draft Dodger Don.” On Thursday’s (June 6) Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which aired on the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the late-night host said, “Eighty years ago on this day, American, British, and Canadian troops stormed the beaches of Normandy to fight the forces of good people on both sides,” referencing Trump’s quote defending white nationalists. “President Biden was in Normandy today to remember our great heroes,” Kimmel continued. “You know, Donald Trump in 2018 infamously opted not to visit the graves of American soldiers in France because he didn’t want to get his hair wet, and he called them suckers and losers.” “The only thing [Trump] ever stormed was Daniels,” Kimmel quipped, referencing Trump’s affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels. “Draft dodger Don,...

While Jeopardy! super-champ Adriana Harmeyer continued her winning ways on Thursday night (June 6), Ken Jennings seemingly made a reference to his former co-host, Mayim Bialik. As reported by The U.S. Sun, Jennings made the reference during the Final Jeopardy round when he told Harmeyer’s opponents, “Unfortunately, that’s not correct.” That’s not how Jennings usually says things, but it is exactly how Bialik phrased her Final Jeopardy rulings when she was host. Now fans are wondering if Ken is copying Mayim, or having a little inside joke involving his former co-host. “After Shira’s response to Fj was revealed, Ken brought back memories of Mayim by saying, “Unfortunately, that’s not correct,”” wrote one viewer on the Jeopardy! Reddit forum. Another fan commented: ‘Wow! That’s totally what Mayim used to say on the show. I’m sure Ken knew exactly what he was saying there.” Earlier this year,...

“It takes a special talent, both physically and mentally, to succeed in a world where your fate is decided in just 10 seconds,” World Athletics president Sebastian Coe told Netflix last year.
Sprint, the upcoming docuseries by the team behind Drive to Survive, covers every millisecond of the long journey from the 2023 World Championships to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Six months before Pat Sajak announced his retirement from his four-decade gig as the beloved star of Wheel of Fortune, his quick wit was still as sharp as ever. In what the host believed was a first, we met a comedy stage hypnotist, Brandon O’Brien, who became the day’s winningest contestant — a Ford Escape! — on the January 27, 2023, episode. At Sajak’s urging, Brandon described his act: “We get the volunteers up onstage, and then they relax, and they’ll pretty much do anything I ask them to do.” “Wow,” Sajak responded, not missing a beat. “It’s like being a game show host.” He should know. Few TV personalities have had the staying power of Sajak, and few have made it look so easy. No small feat in a profession that veteran game show producer Mark Goodson once likened to steering backward down a mountain, looking through the rearview mirror,...

Veteran character actor Tom Bower, best known for his roles in The Waltons and Die Hard 2, has died. He was 86. His passing was confirmed by his sister-in-law, Mary Miller, who told The Hollywood Reporter he died on Sunday, May 30, in his sleep at his home in Los Angeles, California. Born on January 3, 1938, in Denver, Colorado, Bower’s on-screen career began in the 1970s when he appeared in several classic television series. His early credits included The Rockford Files, The Bionic Woman, Lou Grant, Barnaby Jones, and, most notably, The Waltons, where he first played stunt pilot Rex Barker and then, more prominently, Dr. Curtis Willard, who married Mary Ellen (Judy Norton). Bower was later written out of The Waltons when it was revealed his character was killed off-screen during World War II. However, the character returned in an 1981 episode, only he was played by a different actor, Scott Hylands.

Summer Newman endured much emotionally last year after dealing with the “passing” death of her mother Phyllis only to be put through another emotional wringer upon finding out that her mom had faked her death. The good news is that the meaty material gave her portrayer, Allison Lanier, compelling material to submit, which earned her a Daytime Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category this year. Lanier must be doing something right as The Young and the Restless continues to hand the actress with great scenes. In her current storyline, Summer feels like she’s the only sane person in her family as she is still guarded over cousin Claire (Hayley Erin) being around her son, Harrison (Redding Munsell).
