When we think of the best hosts in the history of the Academy Awards, names like Billy Crystal, Bob Hope and Ellen DeGeneres typically top the list. And while Jimmy Kimmel has been an industry favorite as of late with four hosting gigs, there is the call for a new name to host the Oscars: John Mulaney. After hosting the Academy’s Governors Awards last year, Mulaney inadvertently jockeyed himself into position as an Oscar host candidate…and he’s not opposed to it, either.
When prompted by IndieWire whether he would sign on as host of the Oscars, John Mulaney said, “I hosted the Governors Awards, and I really had fun doing that. I will say: I’m open to whatever. I personally have an affinity for [something lower key]. It’s so fun to try to do your absolute best at not the biggest award show, like the Spirit Awards or Governors Awards.

It’s an early Friday morning in May and comedian Alex Edelman is on a Zoom video call from a Los Angeles hotel. He has a bit of a bed head and says that he had to borrow the socks he is wearing, a detail he shares when I tell him I’m nervous about our interview because he’s a really “smart comic.”
“That is so nice but.. I’m not a smart comic. I had that realization today when I figured all the stuff that I forgot to pack for my trip to Los Angeles,” Edelman says. “I forgot dress shoes, a belt. I forgot to pack socks.”
Edelman traveled from his New York City area home for the premiere of Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop Tarts movie, “Unfrosted.” He makes an appearance in the film as the Apple Head character.
“Jerry called out the cast’s name yesterday.

The June skies are clear as the Tribeca Festival gathers indie filmmakers from around the globe with a large slate of features and shorts, music, games, TV, audio storytelling and a major addition this year in De Niro Con, a tribute to the prolific actor and Tribeca co-founder.
The fest moved from April to June in part for the weather but that can’t be taken for granted — last year’s edition opened to a city blanketed with acrid smoke from Canadian wildfires as Mayor Eric Adams handed De Niro the key to the city at a press conference and Tribeca unveiled De Niro Con. Fan events and screenings with star power from Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Billy Crystal, Ben Stiller, David O. Russell, Christopher Walken and others will unspool over the last four days of the festival.
Other retrospectives and reunions will see Steven Spielberg screen and discuss his...

Tribeca Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal doesn’t follow a North Star as she and her team sift through tens of thousands of submissions each year. But as they whittle down those applicants to the 100 or so films comprising the final lineup, themes tend to emerge.
“It’s not like we set out to say, ‘This is what we want to do.’ As an activist film festival, we always look for [political] films,” says Rosenthal, who created Tribeca Festival with Robert De Niro in the wake of 9/11. “This year, there’s a mental health narrative. I don’t know if that’s a post-covid thing.”
Tribeca, now in its 23rd year, will take place from June 5-16 and highlight films led by Kristen Stewart, Lily Gladstone and Jenna Ortega. “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge,” a look at the fashion icon and entrepreneur, will open the festival, with anticipated documentaries about Prince,...

America's Sweethearts (2001)
Starring Julia Roberts, Billy Crystal, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and John Cusack, this movie is a perfect example of a 2000s romcom, with little plot sense, but some fun twists, a romantic premise, and great chemistry between the leads. Nickelodeon and Disney might come to mind when you think of great kids shows. After all, both networks have been producing programming for kids for decades.
Despite that fact, both companies have been under fire in recent years, particularly Nickelodeon, following the release of the Quiet on Set documentary.
Here is the perfect list if you want to expose your kids to some great shows that are not associated with either company.
Hanna-Barbera Classics (Various)
The Hanna-Barbera cartoons are classics that kids and adults of all ages can enjoy together. Many of them are geared toward children but include jokes to amuse adults.
Founded by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera in the late 1950s, Hanna-Barbera Productions produced 249 cartoon series between the 1950s and 1980s. Many of those have since become beloved classics.
A personal favorite of mine is Scooby Doo, and many fans share my love for the crime-solving dog and his Mystery Inc.

David Sanborn, the six time Grammy-winning alto saxophonist who played at Woodstock, composed music for the Lethal Weapon movies, played in the SNL and Late Night with David Letterman bands and worked with everyone from Stevie Wonder to David Bowie, died Sunday afternoon, May 12th, after an extended battle with prostate cancer with complications. He Was 78.
Sanborn’s music is often described “smooth jazz,” but he reportedly rejected that characterization, and one can see why. His lively, iconic sax solo on Bowie’s “Young Americans” is anything but. Sanborn preferred the idea that he “put the saxophone back into rock ’n’ roll.”
Indeed, he worked with a virtual who’s who of rock and R&b legends, including James Brown, Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Elton John, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel, Roger Waters, Steely Dan, the Eagles,...

Ari Emanuel, the CEO of Endeavor and one of Hollywood’s most outspoken voices in the fight against antisemitism, will be honored at the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s National Tribute Gala.
At the annual fundraiser for Swc, which has taken place since 1977 and brings together many of the most powerful and influential people in the business, Jews and non-Jews alike, Emanuel will receive the organization’s highest honor, the Humanitarian Award, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Emanuel, 63, will be feted by colleagues — and give an acceptance speech — at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on May 22. Members of the public can purchase tickets to attend, starting at $1500 a plate, but, in a first, the event will be closed to the press.

My guest this week is Judith Light.
Last season, we saw her take home an Emmy for her guest role in Poker Face, in which she hilariously climbed a rose trellis while cleverly camouflaged in a natty pink and green pantsuit. Such is Light’s talent: from the humor of the aforementioned old folks’ home resident terrorist, to her heartfelt turn as matriarch Shelley Pfefferman in Transparent; from The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, to ABC sitcom Who’s the Boss, she’s done it all. And then there are the multiple Tony wins…
Right now, Light can be seen in Max series Julia, in which she plays Blanche Knopf, the legendary publisher of Julia Child’s books, and in Starz’s horror-comedy show Shining Vale, Light is Courteney Cox’s fabulously passive-aggressive mother Joan.

There is no denying that Robin Williams was one of the greatest entertainers to have graced the industry. His on-screen presence, improvisation skills, and comedic timing, all contributed to making him one of the best comedians of all time. Therefore, it isn’t surprising that the financiers behind the 1992 biographical drama, Chaplin, wanted to cast him in the lead role. After all, he was taking the comedy genre by storm, wasn’t he?
Robin Williams in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009)
As fate would have it, though, the role ended up going to Robert Downey Jr. who did an incredible job and did justice to the life and personality of Charlie Chaplin. "The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour" is likely not remembered by many people, except for Billy Crystal himself. The variety/talk show ran from January 30 through February 27 in 1982, lasting a grand total of five episodes. Crystal was already a successful comedian and beloved figure in the industry thanks to the popularity of his 1970s stand-up work and his role in the 1977 sitcom "Soap," so he had connections. He was able to secure guest appearances from many of his famous comedian friends, including Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Robin Williams, and John Candy for the debut episode. Subsequent guests included Morgan Fairchild, the Manhattan Transfer, Nell Carter, Shelley Duvall, Cindy Williams, Al Jarreau, and Smokey Robinson.
"The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour" fell right in between "Soap" and "Saturday Night Live" on Crystal's professional timeline, and it might be considered something of a dip in his career. The show was canceled after only two episodes aired,...

Her determination to hold onto that rare statistic has led her to agree to host the show yet again next month, marking her record 17th appearance.

When searching for powerful and relatable representations of women in film, most people probably don’t turn to the romantic comedy genre first. The leading ladies of romantic comedies typically have a perfect job as a magazine reporter in a stylish big city apartment, where they wake up every morning fresh-faced with a gorgeous hairstyle. A tall and handsome love interest will sneak his way into her life somehow when she least expects it, and they’ll live happily ever after. Unfortunately, life just doesn’t work that way for most women. But that doesn’t mean romantic comedies are unworthy of love from the female film community. They may not be the most prestigious pieces, but hold deep value for women who want to feel uplifted and hopeful when they’re consuming media. They don’t make kids programming like they used to. It used to be that nearly every animated kids title came with jokes for the adults to get and the kids to grow into, in addition to age-appropriate gags and life lessons for the younger viewers. Nowadays, kids programming doesn’t seem to reflect a belief that young viewers can get a well-written joke. But that’s not the case with Monsters at Work. The Disney animated series, which debuts its second season on Friday, April 5 on Disney Channel and Friday, May 5 on Disney+, has original Monsters, Inc. stars Billy Crystal and John Goodman voicing Mike Wazowski and Sulley once more. Lorne Michaels is an expert at celebrating the legacy of “Saturday Night Live.” The show’s creator has produced variety specials for the NBC program’s 15th anniversary, 25th anniversary and 40th anniversary, so the upcoming 50th season should have a highly entertaining spectacle. Nothing less than a three-hour event would be expected, but how else should “SNL” celebrate the golden anniversary season, which would begin in the autumn of 2024 and continue through May, 2025?
Here is our exciting, fun suggestion for a way to go above and beyond for the live special. Over the course of a 20-22 episode season, NBC would certainly have almost every episode featuring the current cast along with hot guest hosts and musical guests. However, for the other five episodes spread out over several months, devote an entire 90 minutes to each previous decade. Invite back the biggest cast members from a decade along with well-known guest hosts and music stars.

Outside of having one of the greatest rom-com plots of all time (if not the greatest), When Harry Met Sally boasts some of the most gorgeous nature shots of New York City ever caught on film. Billy Crystal reveals to TV Insider that weather almost deprived us of one of its most picturesque scenes. Had they waited just one more day to film it, they would have lost the perfect shot. When Harry Met Sally shows the changing seasons so idyllically. Crystal tells TV Insider its cinematography is “underrated in that way.” One of the film’s most famous moments takes place in Central Park. In it, Harry (Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) stroll through the park talking about their odd sex dreams before going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They’re surrounded by gorgeous autumn leaves in the scene. “It was timed that way,” Crystal says. And the timing was kismet.

There was a time where hate for Anne Hathaway was confoundingly strong. But what had she really done to deserve all of the backlash? It’s not like she was a one-note star – she balanced crappy rom-comcs with terrific performances in movies like Brokeback Mountain and Rachel Getting Married – or was a problem on the set. And yet people had seemingly decided to turn on her sometime in the early 2010s, with a new term, “Hathahate”, being coined. But one who remained faithful in her as an actress and a professional was Christopher Nolan, who cast her as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises and again in 2014’s Interstellar. And for that, Anne Hathaway is forever grateful.

In a career on stage, screen and television that has endured for more than 50 years, writer, actor and comedian Martin Short got his start in a 1972 Canadian production of the stage musical “Godspell” in a cast that included Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Victor Garber, Dave Thomas and Gilda Radner, all of whom would work with Short on subsequent projects in the years to come.
